Tennis In Full Bloom in Indian Wells

Tennis is in full bloom here in the Coachella Valley as the annual BNP Paribas Tournament returns to the Tennis Garden in nearby Indian Wells. Dubbed “The 5th Major” by tennis aficionados, the BNP brings fans and big-name players for two full weeks of excitement. This year’s players include greats like Venus and Serena Williams, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal.

The event (which kicked off Monday, March 5th) includes qualifying rounds for both men and women leading up to the finals on Sunday, March 18th. While tennis is naturally the main event, there are plenty of other activities to experience at the Tennis Gardens. Tennis stars will be on hand to sign autographs, there is an interactive experience in the retail courtyard complete with virtual reality, and live music happens almost daily. Moet and Chandon will set up their annual champagne bar for visitors to relax, unwind, and sip on some bubbles between matches.

Photo from @thedarlingniki

If you are not a tennis fan, you can still enjoy an afternoon or evening taking in a match or two. A few things to know as you watch:

● Each player has a maximum of one bounce after the ball is hit by their opponent to return the ball.
● If the ball bounces more than once, is not returned within the boundaries, or is not returned at all the opponent earns a point.
● The goal is to win enough games to win a set and enough sets to win a match.
● The first person to win 6 games wins the set, and typically matches are the best of 3 or the best of 5

If you plan to attend a match you’ll want to remember a few things before you go:

Photo from @thedarlingniki

● There is not a lot of shade, and you will be sitting in direct sun for a few hours. Bring plenty of sunscreen and a hat.
● Drink plenty of water during the day, although this year’s temperatures should be pretty mild the desert is dehydrating!
● Light colors will keep you the coolest and don’t forget a light layer for evening matches.
● No ice chests or outside food/beverage is allowed, but there are plenty of delightful options once you arrive!
Tickets are available by visiting the BNP Paribas website:

Black History Month in Palm Springs

February is Nationally recognized as Black History Month, a celebration of the contributions and achievements of the African American community. The story of Black History Month actually began over 100 years ago in 1915, when a Harvard trained historian, Carter Woodson, and a prominent minister, Jesse Moorland, founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (also known as ASNLH). The ASNLH is dedicated to researching and promoting the accomplishments of black Americans and anyone of African heritage.
In 1926, the group sponsored national Negro History week. They chose the second week in February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass (born a slave he escaped at age 20 and became an anti-slavery activist). The creation of Negro History week inspired communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs, and host performances or lectures.

Major cities across the country began recognizing Negro History week annually and by the mid-1960s, amidst the civil rights movement, many college campuses evolved the week into a month-long celebration known as Black History Month. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976 and it has been celebrated every February since.
Here in the Coachella Valley, the Palm Springs Black History Committee works year-round to bring events to residents and visitors. This year’s events include:
• “The Artists and Their Work” on February 15th at the Palm Springs Art Museum.
• An adult basketball tournament on February 17th.
• Black History Month parade and Town Fair on February 24th.
For more information on all events please visit The Palm Springs Black History Committee.

Polo in the Desert

Four polo players during a match at Empire Polo

The start of the new year always signals the beginning of polo season here in the Coachella Valley. Many visitors may not realize that Indio is home to not one but two major polo clubs, Empire Polo and Eldorado Polo, that host games from January thru April. The polo fields (which also serve as home to festivals like Coachella and Stagecoach) are located just 30 minutes from our hotel making it an easy drive for Sunday afternoon matches.

Many are familiar with polo thanks to the iconic scene in Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts and Richard Gere’s characters attend a charity polo match filled with champagne, men in Summer suits, and fashionable women in hats. In real life, polo is a much more casual affair, especially at our local clubs, where spectators can choose to tailgate with friends and bring along a picnic lunch and some wine or beer. If a more exclusive experience is what you crave be sure to purchase tickets for Empire Polo’s VIP area where for $35 per person you will have a reserved table under the tents, a champagne divot stomp, and access to bars and table service for food. Eldorado Polo offers Cantina seating where spectators can enjoy the thrill of the game from their table complete with a full menu of food and drinks. Seating is $10 per person.

Opening Day for both clubs is Sunday, January 7th with matches at 12 pm and 2 pm with gates opening at 10 am. Empire Polo will be opening the season with it’s annual Opening Day “Hat Day” and contest, be warned, many attendees take their hats very seriously! For more information on attending a match or the game of polo be sure to visit either of the clubs’ websites.
