Comic Con Returns to Palm Springs

San Diego’s huge Comic Con event has been attracting comic enthusiast celebrities, and artists for years and last year a local Coachella Valley resident, Christopher Spellman, fulfilled a dream of his: to bring a real Comic Con event to the desert. The inaugural year was such a success that Comic Con is back this August 25-27 for its second year at the Palm Springs Convention Center, just a 15-minute drive from the Aqua Soleil Hotel.

The three day event will feature a main exhibit hall complete with costumes, artwork, new & vintage comics, and other comic & cosplay (costume play) related items for sale. There are also panel discussions, live movie readings, zombie mazes, a Geek Film Fest, and arguably the most popular event, the Saturday night Zombie Walk through downtown Palm Springs which had over 100 participants last year and is expected to be even bigger for 2017! This year’s Zombie Walk will begin at the Convention Center and wind through the streets of Palm Springs, ultimately ending at The Hard Rock Hotel for a Zombie Afterparty. There will also be meet and greets with artists, cosplayers, and celebrities like Stan Lee (founder of Marvel Comics), Rob Liefeld (creator of Deadpool), and Khary Payton (actor from The Walking Dead). Another highly anticipated event during this year’s Comic Con is the Saturday night concert of Lynda Carter, most famous for her role as Wonder Woman on the TV series in the 1970s. This will be the first time Lynda will bring her 90 minute show to a Comic Con, anywhere!

I recommend arriving early as last year the wait to enter the exhibit hall was pushing 2 hours. There are options inside for food & drinks but a bottle of water may come in handy if a wait is required. Be sure to have your camera or fully charged phone for the plethora of photo ops along the way and don’t forget your photo ID which is required to pick up your tickets.

Whether you are a comic enthusiast or just looking for something unique to do during your stay Comic Con has a little something for everyone.
